Cub Scouts Day Camp

I spent most of the week at my son's cub scout day camp.  I volunteered as his group's Den Leader/Camp Counselor.  My daughter also joined us as a Tag-Along.  We went to Camp Curran's Cubs in Space Day Camp program and had fun!

There were many fun activities, including:  BB gun shooting, archery, rock climbing, knot tying, and crafts.

My son, Cub, was pretty close to getting into the Quarter Club, where they need to get all of their BB shots into a space the size of a quarter.  This was only his second time using a BB gun and he's only 6 years old, so he'll get there eventually.  All of the boys in my group gave the rock climbing wall a try.  Cub is very afraid of heights, so I was very proud of him for going up the wall a couple of feet.

Each den did an egg drop challenge.  My son's group went a little overboard with keeping the egg safe.  They hollowed out a styrofoam square and put the egg and some packing peanuts in it.  That styrofoam box was put into a shoe box and stuffed with more packing peanuts, cotton balls, and felt squares.  The shoe box was duct taped shut and wrapped in bubble wrap.  Despite this, the egg still broke...

Our group's, my daughter's group's, and one other group's eggs were the only ones that broke.  5 group's eggs didn't break.

The fire department helped with this challenge.  They came to camp in a fire truck and dropped the boxes from the top of the ladder.

Each of the campers received a participation award and a patch for attending the day camp.  The cub scout also earned awards from the activities that they did at the camp.  My son has already earned a couple of the belt loops at the Mom and Me camp that we attended in the spring.  He earned:  Science Belt Loop, Kickball Belt Loop, and Ultimate (Frisbee) Belt Loop.  He also completed some electives for being a Wolf Cub Scout.

My kids also bought inflatable space shuttles as souvenirs from the camp.

4 days of this camp was very long and hot, but it was very fun.  I'll definitely volunteer to attend this again with my son.  It really gave me a new respect for camp counselors.

Thanks for reading!
